Sustainable Juruti
The Fund
The intervention model used by the Sustainable Juruti Program makes use of financial instruments to provide funding for improvements in Juruti’s economy, infrastructure and the quality of life of residents as well as in conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. Funbio has designed the fund to function in an open and transparent way to manage financial and material resources to be invested in programs that target social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainable development in Juruti and the surrounding areas.

The Sustainable Juruti Fund (Funjus) is one of very few such mechanisms. It acts on the local and regional levels in accordance with the evaluation phase that was carried out by Funbio, GVCes and Alcoa.

Funbio views this fund as not simply a financial mechanism to support regional development, but also as a tool which can play a variety of roles in the city. The fund can affect conservation and sustainable development financing, forge agile and effective fiscal partnerships with both public and private entities and promote the organization of civil society around conservation and biodiversity issues.

The Sustainable Juruti Fund:
  • Is voluntary.
  • Is private.
  • Is autonomous.
  • Is able to leverage resources in the long term.
  • Allows safeguards for donors.
  • Uses adaptive management.
  • Is guided by principals of good governance, with a focus on social involvement.
  • Aims to empower the local community, and promote cooperation on investments and the search for new funding sources.

The Sustainable Juruti Fund Pilot Project was created in order to fine tune ideas and tools to meet the specific needs of Juruti. It issued its first call for papers in May 2009.
