The goal of the Financial Sustainability Program of the Cerrado is to propose a financial sustainability strategy that fosters the creation and consolidation of conservation units in this biome. The general lines have been laid down, and include estimates of the main costs involved, sources of income, financing needs, and a mapping of possible public and private sponsors. The idea is to engage Brazilian states, federal government and civil society in the program, seeking partners who are committed to the conservation of at least 10% of the Cerrado biome.
The program will carry out a survey of the financial needs of the Cerrado conservation units, seeking to establish a long-term fund to promote the creation and consolidation of full-protection CUs in the Cerrado, making them less subject to fluctuations in public budgets.
The aim is to develop economic alternatives for the conservation of this biome that are politically, financially, and environmentally feasible, thereby strengthening the efforts of TNC and its partners in the development of this fund. This study will indicate the best alternatives and strategies for the fund, including the legal and institutional frameworks, proposing actions for raising income and applying the resources, and their administration.
