The Atlantic Forest Fund (in Portuguese, FMA) is the result of a partnership between Funbio and the Rio de Janeiro State Department of the Environment (SEA-RJ). At the end of 2007, a Technical Cooperation Agreement was signed with the purposes of streamlining environmental financing in the state, attracting more resources, and providing a short-term alternative to support Protected Areas in the state.
This agreement governed the creation, development, and implementation of a financial and operational mechanism to manage resources from environmental compensations, as determined by the law of National System of Nature Protected Areas (SNUC), as well as additional funds from various sources, applying them to the implementation and the creation of new Protected Areas in the state.
This mechanism was created to bring speed, efficiency, and transparency to the execution of state projects and other initiatives aimed at restoring and preserving the Rio de Janeiro’s biodiversity.
