Over the course of its first decade, Funbio supported, monitored and evaluated 62 programs through five calls for papers on relevant topics, all on a local level throughout Brazil. A total of US$10 million was granted to cooperatives, community associations, universities, businesses and non-governmental organizations.
These programs were funded with a donation of nearly US$20 million to Funbio from the Global Environment Facility – GEF through the World Bank. This was the first contribution received by Funbio and it initiated its work both with the five programs supported by this donation and with funding biodiversity conservation in general. Along the way, Funbio has gained knowledge of financial instruments for conservation as well as an understanding of the needs and dynamics of biodiversity programs.
Funbio has begun to apply the wealth of skills and experience developed during the first generation of programs to a broader range of activity. The Fund now seeks to design and implement integrated environmental plans for priority conservation areas on a regional scale. Funbio strives to look at the causes of loss of biodiversity and make meaningful contributions to its conservation.
