Supporting Programs
Probio II

The National Biodiversity Mainstreaming and Institutional Consolidation Project (Probio II) aims to help change current models of production, consumption and land use in the country, both in the public and private sectors, in order to increase productivity and sustainability.

Because it is host to such an exceptional wealth of species, Brazil has a particular responsibility to protect biodiversity. Indeed, Brazil was the first country to sign the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), an international treaty created during the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development, Rio 92. The Project for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Brazilian Biological Diversity (Probio) was one of the instruments through which the CBD has been implemented in Brazil. Its main achievement was the mapping of priority areas for biodiversity conservation. Probio II will continue this work.

Probio II´s goals is to promote mainstreaming of biodiversity and integration of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in both the public and private sectors in Brazil; and promote institutional consolidation and strengthening of public and private sector partners’ ability to generate and disseminate information relevant to biodiversity. The projetct was signed in 2008 and is scheduled to remain in practice for six years.

Project partners are the Ministries of Environment, Health, Science and Technology and Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, and public institutions Embrapa and Fiocruz.

Expected Outcomes

- By the sixth year of the project, at least three government agencies will have incorporated criteria and parameters related to biodiversity in their plans and policies.
- At least 16 of the 15 quantitative CBD goals set for 2010 for Brazil must be achieved. These goals will be measured with a set of strategic monitoring indicators.
- By the sixth year of the project, through significant involvement of the private sector, at least 1 million hectares of land in “Priority Biodiversity Areas” must be designated for conservation and sustainable use.
