The Brazilian Biodiversity Fund (Funbio) is a non-profit civil association that strives to conserve the country’s biodiversity for 14 years. It was created in 1996 with a US$20 million donation from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to complement government efforts in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the National Program for Biological Diversity (Pronabio).
Toward this end, Funbio serves as more than an intermediary for resource distribution; Funbio takes on new roles creating proposals and innovative solutions in addition to connecting people for conservation. In order to fulfill its mission, Funbio identifies and evaluates important investment opportunities, raises funds, oversees the economic workings necessary to ensure financial sustainability for long-term conservation activity in addition to designing and executing outreach programs and promoting training of local staff.
Thanks to Funbio’s ability to develop projects and manage assets, the organization is often sought out by the private sector to develop their conservation strategies. Funbio’s work aligns with the strategic vision of companies and institutions making an effort to preserve the environment without sacrificing profit through conservation measures on all commercial fronts.
Funbio believes that the way to deal with the challenge of preserving biodiversity is to develop solutions on a par with the size and seriousness of the forces that cause the loss of biodiversity. Through these actions Funbio is able to make a significant contribution toward preserving biodiversity in Brazil.
Funbio´s mission is to provide strategic resources for biodiversity conservation.
